_______
Chad Awalt was introduced to woodcarving at an early age by his grandfather, and his creativity was sparked by growing up with an artistic family. He studied Anatomy at the University of Colorado and has spent the last thirty years continually studying and expanding his knowledge of classical design and traditional art. His abilities range from classical woodcarving to traditional oil painting, with a specialty of rendering the human figure. The designs of the wood sculptures are executed from a single piece of wood that starts as a full log, sometimes weighing up to 800 pounds. Using his tools as sculpting instruments, most of the wood is removed to reveal the figure, or shape beneath. Each piece is dried in a kiln to insure stability of the medium before finishing. Awalt’s work provides a unique perspective on the human form and nature by using materials that continually surprises and delights audiences. His sculptures alternate between full and hollow shapes that define volume with the use of positive and negative space. His work emanates a unique expression of the human form that allows the viewer to experience the beauty and energy that inhabits our lives. For the last 20 years, Awalt has shown in galleries and exhibitions across the country. His work is found in private and corporate collections, ranging from Usher to Disney. He does numerous gallery and juried shows every year and has participated in multiple museum exhibitions and collections.

Possum Doss
Animals Alphabet Soup

Opening Reception: Friday, April 2nd 5PM-8PM
Learn about Possum Doss and his inspiration for the collection
"Animals Alphabet Soup is a collection of 26 educational rhymes with coordinating illustrations about randomly chosen animals from across the globe. This is my first published book and there will likely be others.
I used one of my favorite drawing styles to illustrate this book because I find it somewhat like children’s artful freedom.
My intent with this book is to learn along with those who read it more about some of Earth's amazing creatures, and enliven their interest in the arts by way of the illustrations.
Being a lifelong artist I use a variety of mediums and create in many different styles of work including
painting, sculpture, fiber art, assemblage, drawing and crochet. Apart from high school and a few junior college art courses, my skills are largely self-taught.
Very often children's type art supplies such as chenille stems (pipe cleaners), crayons, construction or colored paper, and nail polish excite my creativity and inspire, but I also use acrylics and watercolors. I make my hats by crocheting in some fantastic forms and have shown and sold art and hats/masks primarily in and around Birmingham, Alabama for the last three decades.
Most of my life has been lived, as now, in Trussville, Alabama, and I went to Hewitt Trussville schools.
The care of my mom is my main focus now, as well as being a visual artist, hatter, and budding writer.
It’s my greatest honor to have Animals Alphabet Soup in your hands and in front of your eyes! Thank
you so very much and, please, think of animals that you like and try drawing them and write poems or
stories about them, as well as any other types of creativities that you enjoy! Be imaginative every day!"
